The racing rules changed for the 1961 season, dictating that engine capacity must be reduced from 2.5 to 1.5 liters. Luckily, Ferrari was well position for the new formula having had developed a 120 degree V6 mid-mounted engine with a maximum output of 190 hp. The slim, low in profile, tubular frame body with the distinctive twin front air intake “nostrils” was affectionally nicknamed “Sharknose” and was the most technically successful development in 1961. The car won five victories of seven Grand Prix races and earned Phil Hill’s first and only World Championship.
